Transforming telecommunications for business

Free business phone lines-the idea may seem impossible. Fibernetics CLEC, under the Fibernetics Group of Companies, have successfully achieved this through its Digital PBX Phone Systems. Growing under the radar

Ever hear of Fibernetics Corp.? No? Reaching some 85% of Canada's population, it is one of Canada's largest by-footprint telecom providers. Still not ringing a bell? Don't worry, you're not alone.

"Nobody knows about us," John Stix, co-founder of Fibernetics, told the Financial Post in an interview. "Because if you think about how we've grown, we've grown under other people's brands so we've kind of been flying under the radar."

Cheaper? Hello

The internet age has raised expectations for small businesses. Decades ago, customers were content to leave a message on a Sunday; now they expect even very small firms to be available around the clock. At the same time, these businesses are more focused on cost savings to support their bottom lines. Firms begin to see the major benefits of web portals

They may be "the new kid on the block," but web portals are slowly and steadily making inroads in Canada's legal community as both a marketing and communication tool.

Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP is using them to attract and keep clients. Osler Hoskin Harcourt LLP hopes to bring them on stream later this year, while Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP is planning a firm-wide rollout in 2006.
